General Legal Hotlines

This calendar provides upcoming dates for general legal hotlines that are held a few times a month. Members of the public are welcome to call to speak to a lawyer who may be able to offer useful advice or recommend a course of action.

Note Most hotlines require you to sign up for a time slot in advance in order to have a lawyer call you directly during the hotline's hours. Be sure to check the hotline's website to sign up and find more information about the process.

For All Texas Residents

FreeLegalAnswers.org
This website allows you to ask a lawyer a non-criminal legal question in writing. You will receive an e-mail when an attorney has answered your question. Only those who meet certain criteria qualify for this service. The American Bar Association runs this service.

LegalLine

LegalLine (provided by the Dallas Bar Association)
The Dallas Bar Association offers LegalLine each Wednesday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. You will need to register online beforehand, and registration closes each Tuesday at 12 p.m. If you have questions, please call the Legal Aid Line at 888-529-5277. LegalLine (provided by the Houston Bar Association)
The Houston Bar Association offers its LegalLine on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of each month between 5 and 8 p.m. Please sign up to select a date and time slot to receive a phone call from an attorney. If you have questions, please call the HBA office at (713) 759-1133. This service is also offered in Spanish on the 1st Thursday of each month from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the same phone number.
LegalLine (provided by the Tarrant County Bar Association)
The Tarrant County Bar Association offers its LegalLine on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Please register online for a time slot in advance to receive a call from an attorney. These times are subject to change, so check the website to confirm the times of upcoming time slots.
Consejos Legales en Español

For Veterans or Seniors

Legal Hotline for Texans Over Age 60 or Medicare Recipients
The Texas Legal Services Center offers a free legal hotline for Texans over the age of 60 or Texans who receive Medicare. The phone number to call is 1-800-622-2520, Option 3, or you can fill out an intake form on their website.
Veteran's Legal Assistance Project
The Texas Legal Services Center offers a free legal hotline for low-income Texas veterans and their families (with a focus on outreach to the disabled veterans who live in rural areas of the state). They provide assistance with civil legal questions. The phone number to call is 1-800-622-2520, Option 2, or you can fill out an intake form on their website. The Texas Lawyers for Texas Veterans program from the State Bar of Texas may also be able to connect veterans with free or low-cost legal assistance.

For Residents of Certain Texas Counties

LegalLine (provided by the Austin Lawyer Referral Service)
The Austin LRS offers its LegalLine to Bastrop, Hays, Travis, and Williamson County residents on the 1st Tuesday of each month from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The phone number to call is (512) 472-8303. Attorneys who are bilingual (English/Spanish) are available / También se habla español.
Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas
Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas provides civil legal services to low-income Texas residents within their service area. You can call their Legal Aid Line to apply for legal services at (888) 529-5277 or apply for assistance through their website.
Texas Access to Justice (TAJ)
Texas RioGrande Legal Aid offers this legal hotline for those who qualify and live within their service area. The hotline is available Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., excluding some holidays. The phone number to call is 1-888-988-9996. You can also contact them by calling 210-212-3700.
