Common Forms of ID

A person may have various documents related to their identity. These include:

  • birth certificate
  • driver license
  • passport
  • immigration documents
  • name change order
  • marriage license
  • death certificate

It is very common to need to update, correct, or find copies of these documents. Because each type of document is administered by a different agency, it can be confusing to know what to do when you need to make changes. This guide will help you understand how to change an identity document or obtain copies of one.

REAL ID

In 2005, the U.S. government passed the REAL ID Act of 2005. This law set minimum standards for a state ID so that it could be accepted by the federal government. A very common situation where the federal government reviews state IDs is going through security to fly on a commercial airline.

After May 7, 2025, federal agencies, including the Transportation Security Agency, will require state IDs to be REAL ID compliant.

Certain identity documents are required to obtain a REAL ID in Texas, including:

  • original or certified birth certificate or unexpired U.S. Passport
  • Social Security card
  • proof of legal name change, if applicable
